Sustainable packaging has moved from a nice-to-have to a buyer expectation. Here is what US brands need to know in 2025 to make credible, compliant, and cost-effective eco-friendly choices.
Recycled content is the baseline
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) content is now widely available and affordable. Corrugated board can reach up to 100% recycled content while remaining strong and recyclable, making it the easiest sustainability win for most brands.
PFAS-free coatings are increasingly required
Several states have enacted or expanded restrictions on PFAS in food packaging. If you sell food products, specify PFAS-free grease-resistant and moisture-barrier coatings to stay compliant and protect your customers.
Compostable is not one thing
“Compostable” splits into home-compostable and commercially compostable. Home-compostable materials break down in backyard conditions, while commercial options need an industrial facility. Match the claim to where your customers can actually compost it.
Inks and finishes matter too
Soy-based and water-based inks lower VOCs compared to conventional petroleum inks. Avoid heavy lamination where possible, since some coatings complicate recycling.
Certifications that carry weight
Look for FSC and SFI certifications for responsibly sourced fiber. These provide chain-of-custody documentation you can use to back up your sustainability claims.
A simple 2025 checklist
- Specify recycled content where strength allows.
- Require PFAS-free coatings for any food contact.
- Choose the right compostable tier for your customers.
- Use soy-based or water-based inks.
- Ask for FSC or SFI documentation.
